In late 1823, Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) leads a group of fur/skin hunters led by Captain Andrew Henry (Domhnall Gleeson). While he and his son were out hunting, their camp was attacked by a group of Arikara Indians. Many victims fell, and the rest managed to escape by boat.

Glass guided them back to Fort Kiowa by road which resulted in them leaving most of the game on the riverbank.

While looking around the camp, Glass was attacked by a mother bear which badly injured him. John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy) suggested that Glass be killed so as not to hinder their journey.

The captain, who couldn't bear to do it, gave a big reward for those who wanted to take care of him until Glass died and buried him properly.

Fitzgerald is willing with the intention to replace his lacking income due to the abandoned game. In addition, Glass's child and a young man are also willing to be with Glass and care for him until he dies.
