In order to strengthen Game Pass and its mobile business, Microsoft considered purchasing Sega, Niantic, and Bungie.

According to internal records, Microsoft considered buying a number of gaming businesses during the previous three years, including Sega, Bungie, and Niantic. Microsoft thought that these acquisitions would strengthen Game Pass and broaden the gaming market for the computer giant.

The Verge reports that documents submitted as part of Microsoft's ongoing case with the Federal Trade Commission on its purchase of Activision Blizzard shed light on all the businesses the company had been considering acquiring recently. Sega, best known for Sonic the Hedgehog, was one of the biggest. Microsoft's chief of gaming Phil Spencer requested "strategy approval" in an email to Satya Nadella and Amy Hood in November 2020 before approaching Sega about a potential acquisition.

Spencer wrote in the email, "We believe Sega has built a well-balanced portfolio of games across genres with global geographic appeal, and will help us accelerate Xbox Game Pass both on and off-console." Sega is a publicly traded Japanese corporation, therefore he pointed out that there would be "deal complexities." It's unknown whether Spencer's request was granted by Nadella or how far any potential negotiations between Microsoft and Sega progressed.

Sega was not, however, the only business that Microsoft was considering buying. Numerous additional businesses were listed in a 2021 internal company document, including the creators of Hitman and Hades, as well as the developers of Pokemon GO, Hades, and Hades 2, including Bungie, the maker of Destiny, who was acquired by Sony in 2022.

All of the aforementioned businesses were identified as purchases that would help the business achieve its objective of "audience expansion," with a few, like Bungie and IO Interactive, also bringing "engagement and social interaction" to the table. Microsoft noted that Destiny was among the most-played games on Game Pass in terms of player hours, and that by purchasing the studio, Microsoft would secure not only its valuable intellectual property (IP) and devoted fan base, but also the ability to integrate the studio's live operations infrastructure into the other Xbox Game Studios.

One of the main factors driving the still-pending $69 billion acquisition by Microsoft is the Activision Blizzard-owned mobile game developer King. Although it is uncertain whether Microsoft and other mobile gaming businesses had any meaningful negotiations, these records demonstrate that Microsoft has had its eye on a number of mobile game companies for a number of years.

The most recent information to emerge from the ongoing FTC hearing is that Microsoft may have considered buying Sega. During the hearing, Spencer stated that The Elder Scrolls VI is at least five years away and that Microsoft acquired ZeniMax and Bethesda Game Studios in part to prevent Starfield from becoming a PlayStation exclusive.
