The first of seven books in the series, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, was first published in the UK in 1997 and the final book was published in 2007. Each book has become a bestseller.

The book was adapted into eight films, including the first release in 2001 and the final release in 2011, grossing $7.7 billion worldwide at the box office. This film "will remain at the core of the franchise and will be available for viewing worldwide," Max assured fans.

This includes the "Fantastic Beasts" film franchise, the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child amusement park, amusement parks, and many toys and games.

Fans reacted strongly to news of the TV series, with many taking to social media to criticize Rowling's decision and involvement. Rowling has been embroiled in controversy in recent years for expressing transphobic views.
