Gasparilla attracts thousands of tourists from near and far.

On Saturday, more than 100 floats with dancing krewes and blasting high-energy music rolled by as an estimated 300,000 onlookers lined the street and were showered with sparkling beads. Many of them were dressed in their best pirate garb.

Gasparilla has existed for a while. Having began in 1904, it is currently the third-largest parade in the nation.

Even though it was chilly and cloudy when the day began, partygoers didn't appear to bother.

"It's not very nice outside. Does that have any impact on you?" Kelly Ledd of FOX 13 was questioned about Ruskin.

She chuckled, "Just keep drinking and remain warm.

Before the customary pirate raid about one o'clock, the temperature increased significantly. The tradition of Gasparilla, named for the legendary pirate Jose Gaspar, who assaulted the city from the water, dates back to 1911.

The parade began at Bay to Bay Boulevard and finished at Cass Street, which is closer to the center of town.

Thomas Walter, who traveled from Jacksonville to attend one of Tampa's biggest parties, is just one of the many people who travel from outside the area to attend the event in addition to residents.

He remarked, "I heard that was a terrific time. "Go outside. Hang out and pretend to be a pirate for the day."
